Things have started to progress. I went to see a friend on Thursday night, just a quick visit. One thing led to another and 41/2 huors later I left only because it was after midnight! I picked up 8 cam followrs / tappets. (I seem to have sparked some debate on the FoFH Forum as to there name, but that's another story)

So with 16 Followers to choose from I should be able to select the best 8 to go back in the tractor.

A simple job to then install these back in the engine block.

Then I could add the cam shaft through the front of the engine. The cam shaft was in perfect condition even though the followers where warn. I bolted the front bearing housing down for the shaft and the bottom bolt was wired to a bolt of the oiler above the front crank bearing. it's easier to show you in a picture than explain it.

I remembered to add the oil pickup for the oil pump that draws oil from the sump. I had a right game finding the small bolt that holds the bracket in. This prompted a tidy up and labelling of all existing bolts so I knew where they go. Should make assembly a quicker process.

I've cleaned the sump. No debris in the bottom now. I cleaned the outside and a lot of the old paint came off. Paint doesn't seem to stick very well to the alloy parts of the engine. I've left it to dry but I do need to have another go at removing all the paint to give myself a chance of putting a half decent looking new coat of paint on.

Whilst at my friends on Thursday night I explained I bought a Britool tool set so I could work on the tractor with the tools originally intended to be used with it. At this point he opened a draw and produced this....

It is the original Ferguson tool for aligning the clutch! It has stamped on the end FT2 and the Churchill tool mark. Idon't know what it is about these old tools but I love them as much as the tractors. They maKe the job so much easier to do.

I have a homemade diy website which my girlfriend made up for me a few years ago its pretty basic , i always say im going to get someone to upgrade it with better software but never get around to it. I should be able to help you with your cam follower problem as Ialways have fergie parts knocking about and there are a few tef engines in one of the sheds, ill get a good look on saturday as its now dark when i get home in the evening. Well Colin the website looks very professional. I can't believe how much ferguson stuff you've got. Thank you for having a look for the cam followers hopefully I can get some from somewhere. I spent a good hour looking at your site. Very useful one of those ferguson cranes. I'd love to own one. about the only thing I'd get in my garage now it's full of bits of tractor.

But sadly not much rebuilding. The project has come to a stand still over the Tappets (cam followers). I've been told by a couple of companies now that they can't get hold of them new. "they don't really wear out" they all say. SO If you've taken appart a TE-F20 engine and you've 4 or so in good conditionjust lying arround, please get in touch I'm interested. I've posted a note on the FoFH forum asking for some.

I have made a decision about the oil pump. I am going to use the original one. The pressure has always been good and when I consulted the manual the .006 gap between inner rotor (small radius) and outer Rotor (large radius) was not as good as the mimimum .001" new gap. but well within the .010" maximum. It is an Item I can get to quickly once the tractor is back together if I do need to replace it.

On a better note I went to Newark Vintage tractor show on Saturday with Roy. A fine display from both the FoFH Marquee and the Ferguson Club stand in the George Stevenson Pavillion. I picked up some needed parts for the Restoration.

All the photos I have taken are really random.I hope Roy has some better ones? I don't think I have a single one of the whole tractor, Just specific part shots. I did find this ferguson crane. and what is more interesting is it had a brass plaque on it with the maximum lifting values at the different extension levels.

I also took a lot of pictures from funny angles of this fine example of the ferguson 3 Ton Trailer. I have a friend who will be restoring one of these soon So I took a lot of pictures for him.

I'll be creating a page soon with the best pictures on for refeence.

Auction

I also Bought A Britool Tool box with sockets at the auction. All the sockets are there but a few of the tools are missing and I need to aquire them from eBay. On the whole not bad. A box like this went on eBay recently for £130!

I spoke to Ian today at Britool, I wanted to find out more about the brand and the tools arround in the 1950's He thinks he can lay his hands on a catalogue from the time and might send me a copy. For the picture below E meansEngineers and was for 1/2" sized items. So everything has E in fromt of it. It will be so nice to work on the tractor with the tools that where originally suggested to be used.

Starting A Ferguson on the handle

Roy has been repairing Jim's TE-D20 and has got it to the point where he can now start the tractor with the starting handle. Well done Roy. Not sure if it was warm or from cold when starting!

I spend a very happy 5ish hours in the garage yesterday. I got a lot done. It took about an hour to work out how to put the pistons in the liners. Getting the compressor on was the easy part. It took a quick push technique to get them in. So once I'd worked that out it took 20mins to get them all in.

On each of the pistons there are marks on the one side. I've made sure I've put all the markings in the same direction.

The pistons also have marked on them numbers 1to 4 so you know which piston goes in which bore. I did also mark them myself. The picture below shows the number 1 on both halves of the bearing shell.

So with the pistons in I then moved them to the top of the liner and pushed the liners half way out the block. This gave enough clearance to get the crank in.

I used the jack out of my car to raise the crank precisely up into the block. Once the central bolt was in I could remove the jack.

I used the old oil seal as a template to knock in the new seal.

I then secured the back bearing and the oil seal housing which all have the same set of bolts. In the manual it says tighten. It doesn't say how tight they should be. This got me thinking about the torque settings. The main fasteners all have torque settings but what about the minor bolts. These I nominally tightened to 15 Ib.ft.

I then pushed the liners and pistons back into the block. I then but the bearing shells onto the big ends and tightened the bolts. I have to get some split pins

The last thing for the day was to assemble the front bearing housing.
